Small. On purpose.
Maarifa is a small design and build studio working out of Nairobi and London. This page is what we care about and how we work — in plain English, because if we can't explain that clearly, why would you trust us with anything else?
We started Maarifa because we kept looking at the work being shipped around us — websites, apps, brands, all of it — and finding it hard to believe those were the versions everyone had signed off on. Sub-standard things, dressed up as the best.
We think the reason is usually the same: too many hands in the middle, too many meetings, not enough people who actually cared holding it together end to end.
The best part of this job is watching a client meet their finished thing. The right logo. A site that finally represents the work properly. A tool that saves them a whole afternoon every week. That look on their face — that's why we do it.
Small on purpose. We take one or two projects at a time. That's the whole studio's capacity, not a queue behind a wall of account managers.
We work from home most days, and out of a coworking space a few days a week when there's a client meeting or the work calls for it. The setup means we can start on Monday what a bigger studio would need three weeks to schedule.
We design and we build. Same team, same brain, from the first sketch to the finished thing. Nothing falls between design and development because there isn't a wall between them — it's the same people, sitting at the same desk.
Five things westand by.
In plain English, so there's no room to hide behind them later.

We don't take work we can't deliver.
If a project isn't the right fit — because of the timeline, the scope, or because someone else would do it better — we'll say so. That's a harder conversation to have than to hide from, but it's the honest one.
- 02
We're honest about what's possible.
You'll hear from us when something can be done in a week and when it can't. We'd rather tell you the truth up front than fudge a promise and hope it works out. When we say a thing is done, it's done.
- 03
We build things properly, not to look good on our site.
The best work looks quiet. It works well. It doesn't need to win awards. We'd rather ship something that quietly does its job for years than something that photographs well and breaks the moment someone tries to use it.

The same people, start to finish.
The person you meet on the first call is the one designing your brand, writing your code, and picking up the phone when something breaks two years later. No handovers, no account managers, no losing something in translation.
- 05
No jargon, no surprise invoices.
You'll never get an email full of design-speak or engineering-speak from us. And you'll never get a bill that isn't in the range we agreed. Scope changes get discussed properly, not billed quietly at the end.
